Paul Krugman turns in a sloppy column today with "True Blue Americans". It starts off as a critique of of the horrendously bad farm bill currently making its way through Congress and even includes some half-hearted praise for President Bush. However, the meat of the column is Krugman's half-assed statistical analysis of the so-called "Red States". Low and behold, the Red States are filled with nothing but adulterers, murderers and welfare queens! Does Krugman call for an end to the enormous transfer of wealth to the evil Red States? Nope, it's "a fact of life". All he wants is an end to the hypocrisy that the Red States represent "real america". Message: since Red States are rolling in dough from their welfare checks, they should quit complaining about the Blue States.

More on Peter Bauer: Amity Shlaes discusses his legacy in "Aid, development and guilt after September 11", the Financial Times has an obit as well, Paul Craig Roberts writes "A dissenter on development", and Bruce Bartlett writes "R.I.P. Peter Bauer".

Is economist Peter Bauer dead? This obit over at the wildly anti-immigration site Vdare.com, says he died Thursday night, but I haven't seen any other news of it. This is a terrible loss.

UPDATE: The Guardian obit is here. It's also reported on the Cato Institute's website, but I can't access it. The link is here.
